Perception of Nursing Students on Nurse¢¥s Caring Behaviors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of nursing students on nurse¢¥s caring behaviors. Subjects of this study were 656 nursing students from baccalaureate nursing programs in Taegu-Kyungbuk area. Instrument of this study was Caring measurement Tool developed by Lee(1996) for the evaluation of quality of nursing care. The 7 point Likert scale was consisted of 27 nurse¢¥s caring behaviors, which were divided to 3 factors, accessibility and availability, emotional support and giving information, and giving protective environment. Chronbach alpha of the toool in this study was 0.9486. Data were collected from 1st May, 1998 to 20th June, 1998, and analyzed with SPSS 8.0 for Window program.

The results of the study were

1. The most important caring behavior perceived by nursing students was ¢¥provide hygienic treatment or nursing care¢¥(average 6.28), the second ¢¥meet patient friendly and intimately¢¥(5.97), and the third ¢¥provide clean and sanitary environment¢¥(5.93).

2. The least important caring behavior was ¢¥hold patient¢¥s shoulder and back¢¥(5.16).

3. Average scores of the perceived importance in whole items(27 items) was 5.68.

4. Average scores of the perceived importance in the factors of caring were giving protective environment 5.73, accessibility and availability 5.67, emotional support and giving information 5.63.

5. There were nosignificant differences in the scores of importance in the factors by most of the nursing student¢¥s characteristics except the educational year.

6. Caring behavior perceived most important in all of the different groups of nursing students was ¢¥provide hygienic treatment or nursing care¢¥.
